Amsterdam learnt how to dominate the waters. In this city one discovers a past of battles and oppression and a present of freedom, tolerance and prosperity.

Amsterdam is a city that still captures the imagination of the tourist. Its romantic canals, its red light district, its imposing museums and the references to the Nazi invasion make Amsterdam a place to enjoy and understand.

Anne Frank House

A visit to this house helps visitors to learn all the horror of Amsterdam’s Nazi past and how their citizens tried to cope with the crimes of Hitler. One can start to understand Anne's claustrophobic feelings in the apartment she shared with her family and friends. Deeply emotional but worth a visit.

Jewish Historial Museum

Four neighbouring Synagogues form this complex. This is the perfect place to learn the tenets of Judaism and the importance of Jewish people to the life in Amsterdam. 100,000 Jews were deported to concentration camps and only a few returned. The Museum also deals with this part of history.

Centraal Station

Although most tourists get to Amsterdam through this station, few people turn round when they leave it to admire the fantastic façade in Northern Renaissance style. It stands proud on a man-made island.

Dam Square

The main square in Amsterdam is a place of controversial beauty. The jumbles of styles only add to the enjoyable experience of standing by the Nationaal Monument and observing life passing by. The Royal Palace is mainly used for protocol meetings and parties.

Canal Tour

Every tourist in Amsterdam will enjoy one of the many canal tours that can be booked. Several companies cater for different tastes: from day time to candle light tours at night the experience is breathtaking.

Museum Quarter

All art styles come together in this quarter with museums for every taste and in every style. Some of the best cafés and restaurants are also here.

Red Light District

In most cities an area like this would be concealed, in Amsterdam, however, is part of the tourist district and included in tourist circles. It is not at all embarrassing to be seen here as it is so open, and it would be a shame not to visit this area.

Food

Dutch food has a heavy Indonesian influence, but one can find different restaurants in this city to satisfy even the most demanding appetite. Cuisines from everywhere find a place in Amsterdam. There are some very good Argentine restaurants for meat lovers.

The Walks

There are several walks to do in Amsterdam. For those people who enjoy walking they are going to find fantastic routes around the canals. These walks provide with good views of the city and an opportunity to appreciate daily life in Amsterdam.

Street Market

Located in Waterlooplein from Mondays to Saturdays this is the liveliest flea market in town. It offers a great variety of items, since nice silver jewellery to second hand clothes. It used to be bigger but it was engulfed by the development of the city.
