Amsterdam Has Fewer Hotels Than Many Cities So It Pays To Book Ahead

Accommodation in Amsterdam can be scarce at busy times, so plan ahead if you want the best, the cheapest or the nicest boutique hotel. Here are some recommendations

The best hotels in Amsterdam often get booked up well ahead. The city has a shortage of accommodation, because of its canals and narrow streets, and also has a wealth of top visitor attractions: the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt’s House and even the red light district and the infamous drug cafes.

Yet Amsterdam has a wide range of hotels to suit all tastes and budgets, from designer-chic luxury to cheap and characterful canalside houses via midrange affordable options. There is even a floating boat hotel, conveniently placed a short walk from Amsterdam’s main Centraal Station.

Being close to the station is an advantage in Amsterdam, as this is where most train and plane travelers will arrive. Amsterdam's streets can be tricky to negotiate and taxis often have to take a long way round in order to get somewhere. Canals are pretty but they do create problems! Any hotel that is close enough to walk to from Centraal Station is worth seeking out.

Here are some Amsterdam hotel recommendations in three price brackets from a seasoned Amsterdam visitor.

Budget Hotels in Amsterdam

The Acacia

For a typical Amsterdam canalside location, the Acacia is a good budget hotel option in the delightful Jordaan area. The owners also have rooms in two nearby canal boats.

Amstel Botel

Nothing luxurious but very convenient, in a dock right by the central Centraal Station. Noise can be a drawback but it’s a comfortable budget Amsterdam hotel.

Midrange Hotels in Amsterdam

Canal House

Three 17th-century canal houses have been expertly converted into one of the most atmospheric hotels in Amsterdam. Not far from the Anne Frank House.

Keizershof

Another canal house, this one dating back to 1672. Expect history and character but not every room is ensuite.

Singel Hotel

Named for the quiet canal that it stands by, the Singel is also very central and a short walk from Centraal Station. Small rooms but very friendly staff.

Expensive Hotels in Amsterdam

The Dylan

The Dylan is where rock and movie stars often stay, as it oozes style and luxurious comfort, as well as being by a canal, but set back slightly from the bustle.

Pulitzer

One of Amsterdam's best hotels, again built out of canalside houses. This time there are several houses that have been knocked together to create a warren of luxury rooms and sleek service.

TOP TIP

Check online hotel booking websites as well as with the hotels direct. If checking with a hotel website, it may show ‘no accommodation’ for specific dates only because some rooms have been blocked off for sale through booking agencies. The agencies may have them at a cheaper rate, too, so always check around.
